There are local rose societies all over the United States. In Arizona, there are four rose societies affiliated with the American Rose Society (ARS). Three of the Societies are spread across the Phoenix metropolitan area, and the fourth is the Rose Society of Tucson.
A person can be a member of a local rose society, or if you’re like me, you can pay dues to all groups to ensure you know what’s going on in Arizona’s rose community.
Many people broaden their community footprint by joining the American Rose Society. Becoming a member of the ARS is not a requirement. Still, rosarians are encouraged to join the national organization to take advantage of the publications, discounts, and certification opportunities unavailable at the local level.
A local rose society holds monthly meetings conducted in a friendly social atmosphere. As you can imagine, Arizona’s Rose
Societies typically don’t meet during July and August because of extreme temperatures and summer travel. The meetings are an excellent place to meet people who love roses, grow roses, and teach about roses.
Rose Society members include new, experienced, and young and old growers. It also includes Rose Show aficionados, budding horticulturists, talented arrangement artists, and photographers.
Meetings are open to any interested person in the community. Local membership dues are pretty reasonable and allow a person to participate in local Society’s activities, including the rose show. Membership also ensures you are notified of upcoming rose farm and nursery tours or other interesting venues for rose growers.
Below I’ve included links to help you find the right Society for you. If you have any questions, please send me a note and I do my best to help.
The youngest of Arizona’s Societies, this Society meets at Heritage Presbyterian Church in Glendale. Members of the Society maintain the Sahuaro Ranch Rose Garden.
Arizona’s oldest Rose Society is also the largest Society in the state. Members helped design the MCC Rose Garden, which features more than 9,000 roses. It hosts an annual rose show at Mesa Community College.
This Society meets at the Valley Garden Center in Phoenix. Members maintain the rose garden at Encanto Park and sponsor a rose show in April.
Founded in 1960, members meet monthly at the Tucson Botanical Garden to share knowledge about growing roses in Southern Arizona. Members volunteer at the Cele Peterson Rose Garden and conduct a rose show in April.
